Family Date

Since we weren't going on a vacation for Spring Break, we planned some special things for the kids to do. This weekend we went to the zoo, grabbed linner (lunch/dinner), and surprised the kids with a carriage ride downtown.

It was our first trip to the zoo this season, and the conditions were darn near perfect! It had rained overnight and a bit in the morning, but it cleared up and the temperatures were heavenly. The zoo wasn't very busy, probably because most were scared off by the potential rain.

This is probably the earliest in the year we had been to the zoo, because I can't recall seeing all the beautiful tulips:
The red pandas are usually pretty lazy, and can rarely even be spotted. They must have liked the weather as much as we did, because they were out and about:
And the bear was happy too. He usually sits in his little pool, or paces at the top of the ridge in his "cage". Today he was chewing on a stick, and playing with a ball and what looked like a cooler:
The gibbons were busy screeching and swinging:
This poor giraffe looked so uncomfortable trying to eat its snack...but I'm pretty sure this is the norm. Aidan kept saying, "Giraffes are herbivores, they eat plants and grass!"
The meerkats were lively too:
I didn't get a picture, but there were some elephants on the other side of the pond eating grass. One of them was reaching its trunk up and over the rocks to grab the grass on top of the rocks and was feeding it to himself. He was quite crafty:
Cutie pie boy stopping for a split second for a pic. Man, I love those blue eyes:
The baboons:
We drove downtown for linner, and had some time to kill before our carriage ride so we strolled around a bit:
When we were walking, we saw a few carriages and Ava said, "Oh, why can't we ride in one?" Little did they know we had a surprise up our sleeve:

After the ride, the kids got to pet Spirit:
